Lots of Big Rocks!

Well, 2 more loads of 4-8" rock later (that's 6 dump trucks full!), we should hopefully have a road that cement trucks can get in and out of - keep your fingers crossed for Tuesday! Weather is supposed to be nice both tomorrow and Tuesday, so that should hopefully dry the ground out and make it a little more stable.

Rain Gods, We Have a Problem

To our dearest rain gods: While we appreciate that you provide us with lush, beautiful green surroundings, we have to ask for a break!

We encountered a problem today when the cement trucks came...apparently, our land said it was full of water and couldn't take anymore and gave way. The cement truck sank (unfortunately I wasn't there in time to see it in the mud)!

Only one tried to back it's way in, but all three were there and waiting!

Not sure how this worked (I'm sure Chris could explain the physics of it to me...), but the pump truck made it in just fine and was all set up to go! (You can sort of see it in the top of the picture.)

Needless to say, we didn't get to pour our foundation walls today. Hopefully tomorrow we can get some more rock in and have them back out on Friday. Hopefully the rains gods will also get this message and ease up for a bit! :)

Bob, I researched these facts, especially for you:
Since May 1st, we have only had 10 days where it didn't rain. Most of these days were the beginning of May - it has rained everyday since May 15th except 1. That is a total of 2.55" of rain in these 18 days...In the month of May, we normally only average 1.78".

Foundation Walls are Finished

The walls of our foundation are up and ready for inspecting! Hopefully all will go well on Tuesday and we'll be able to pour the walls on Wednesday!

Holy tall walls!!

Start of Foundation Walls and Apron

They started building the walls for the foundation. Will probably take another day or two to finish.
That's a lot of rebar! Since the back side will essentially be a retaining wall because it is against the hill, I guess they use more rebar than normal. They said there are still a couple of horizontal layers to be added.
Those panels need to go up around the whole house where cement is going to be poured. Have to get all the rebar in place first, though!
Our driveway now has an apron. No, it's not pretty like the aprons Mel made me for Christmas...just plain old asphalt. Don't ask me because I don't really understand the point of it either. Has something to do with right-of-way access off main road and a requirement from King County building department, so here it is! Nice bonus is the guy graded the driveway and filled in the potholes while he was at it (thank you, guy, whoever you are!). I know, next week when the cement truck comes to pump the foundation, the pot holes will be there again. It will be nice for a least a few days!

Footings being Poured

Cement truck and pump truck.
Cement truck dumping into pump truck.
Video of them pouring:

MacGyver had a great time, but had quite the bath when we got home!
If you look close, you can see all the sticky weeds stuck to him along with all the mud!

Rock and Footings

Today we got a load of huge rocks to make a "construction entry" (a.k.a. a rock driveway). They are big! I don't know if ole Honey Wagon is going to survive driving over these things - luckily they won't be the permanent driveway!

So, our hole got filled with just a touch of water...some of it is what is draining out of the hill, but most of it is from the rain. The foundation guys had such a happy look on their face when they arrived and saw this (especially the one who had a hole in his boot)!

They managed to work around/through the water to get the frames of the footings in place. Let's hope we have a nice inspector tomorrow and we are signed off to pour the footings and the foundation!

Swimming Graduation

My Sea Bear graduated from swim lessons!! He is such a natural swimmer - he just needed a few pointers and he was off! His teacher would tell me every week how impressed she was with him and how good he was doing!

Just a reminder of what he used to look like...

Cleared Lot

The area is almost cleared and ready for the foundation. We're going to have a HUGE house!! It's amazing how it has doubled in size since the day when we staked it off! It looks big!!

You can't see much clearing from this picture, but I wanted to take a picture from the same spot over the days to capture the progress - here's #1.

Here we are in the basement.

Firewood...

...lots and lots of firewood! Good thing we'll have a wood-burning fireplace and plenty of room for a backyard fire pit!

One of three huge rocks that were unearthed.

Chris took his new bus for the first time to meet me after work. His stop is conveniently located at the end of the driveway!

Where's the House Going??

Today we went out and marked off where the house is going to be located! It's so hard to imagine since it hasn't been cleared yet! It looks tiny, but I'm sure this is very deceiving since we were working around the trees and shrubs! :)

I'm standing in the garage...
The back corner is down there somewhere!

Although he's absent from this picture, dad was more interested in talking to and feeding the horses!

Success!

With daily persistence on Steph's part and a few phone call on Dad Berg's part, we were finally issued our building permit today!! Yay!

We are Land Owners

We closed on our land today! We now officially own 4 acres of land! Soon to be the home of "Outfield Farms"!

Sugar Bear's First Swim Lesson

I had my first swim lesson, and it was awesome! I'm now just like Michael Phelps, minus the medals, hashish, and skill.

Steph captured the ACTION on our new video camera, and yours truly also created his first "video film" of the 21st century!

Vancouver Olympics

Train ride to Vancouver. Most of the tracks are along Puget Sound, so it makes for a very pretty ride during the day (which may be the only redeeming thing about the train!). We actually saw a number of eagles out feeding in the water in a couple of different spots - very cool!
Finally at the hockey game!

Chris remembered his binoculars and said he could see the whole game great!
Switzerland wins in a 2-1 shoot-out after no score in sudden "victory" overtime. (We decided with a motto of "with glowing hearts" they couldn't call it sudden death!) You can sort of see from the picture that the skinny displays around the stadium showed the country's flag waving - it was cool looking!
The Olympic rings illuminated out in the harbor.
The Olympic cauldron.
You'll have to excuse my face at it was POURING down rain and we were soaked and cold! :)
Thought we'd take the bobsled out for a try!
Chris got to ride in the front seat of one of the trains we took around Vancouver. He was SO EXCITED that he got to look through the train operator's window as we went! The lady sitting next to me whispered to me that all men act like they are 6, even her 50 year old husband!
